• Blood Tests: Blood is collected and tested to check many things. When your vet requests blood tests on your pet, you may be wondering “What do blood tests show?” Here are some of the most common reasons we test your pet’s blood:
• CBC: This is an overall general blood test (complete blood count) that can be a good indicator of what is going on with your pet. It gives us a count of the white and red blood cells as well as a platelet level. Irregularities can indicate allergies, infections, dehydration, anemia, or outside organisms.
• Heartworm: This test checks for the presence of parasitic proteins. This is a very serious disease. We recommend having the test run annually.
• Blood Urea Nitrogen and Creatine: This test is run to analyze the health of the kidneys.
• ALT and Bilirubin: These tests are run to check liver health.
• Amylase and Lipase: May indicate pancreatitis.
• Glucose: Can indicate diabetes.
• Electrolytes: Elevated levels can indicate or rule out several conditions.
• Thyroxine (T4): This is a test of the health of the thyroid.

• Urinalysis: This is a standard part of a veterinarian examination. A urine specimen can tell the doctor what may be going on with your pet. Irregularities in the urine can be an indication of urinary tract infection or other infection, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or several other conditions.
• Fecal Testing: Fecal tests are commonly performed to check for intestinal parasites that may be present in the GI tract.
• X-rays: X-rays aren’t only used to view broken bones and to determine what odd household items your pet ingested. X-rays can help a veterinarian see anomalies in an animal’s internal organs that can help diagnose minor and major medical conditions.
• Ultrasounds: Ultrasound tests offer the veterinarian a 3-D view of your pet’s organs to check for abnormalities. Organ size and texture are visible through ultrasound testing which is helpful when making a diagnosis.
• EEG/ECG: This test is done to check your pet’s heart health. It can detect irregular heart rhythm and organ enlargement.
